My Reading Habits

Published on 29 November 2023 at 19:41

I believe I have mentioned before that, whilst I am writing, I cannot read. I believe this has something to do with style of writing perhaps? Maybe someone else’s style would try and intrude on my writing, or perhaps it is just the words. When writing I am constantly thinking of the plot and where it’s going, checking in my head if the timeline makes sense. How could I possibly have someone else’s words encroaching on my thoughts, my head would explode! Well, perhaps that’s a bit over dramatic, but my poor husband would get no sense out of me. So I either read, or I write!

When I was young, I used to go to the public library every Saturday morning and get out 3 books to last me through the week. However, I was in my element when it was the summer holidays as I would return after 3 days to get another 3 books out! The librarian queried once whether I had read them all, or was just changing them for something different but no, I assured them that I had read all three, and enjoyed them too.

Then later in life, when I had left school and was travelling by train to London every day, I would have a book to read, very often an Agatha Christie as I already knew I liked murder mysteries! I also realised I had a love for the Russian classics of Tolstoy, for I read War and Peace and Anna Karenina and also Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago.

Now in Spain there is another change in my reading style, but this time it is due to the format. Since Brexit it has not been financially viable to buy books from the UK, as somewhere along the line, although books are zero VAT handling charges get added, and the cost increases for paperbacks. So now I either buy second hand books from the charity shops or e-books to read on my tablet.

Books are constantly part of my life, whether reading, writing, marketing or publishing. I cannot, and indeed do not wish to get away from books as they enrich our lives and take us to places far and wide. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I do. Let me know how your reading habits have changed over the years. I would love to hear from you !
